Why to undergo the teeth whitening? Whiten the teeth means to achieve their lighter shade for long time. Already since eruption of the tooth into the mouth begins its original shade darken. It is caused by color pigments, which are contained in foods and beverages. The most common cause of tooth discoloration is the consumption of black tea, coffee, cola, red wine and smoking or chewing tobacco. The teeth may be naturally darker already during pruning. Sometimes it is also the antibiotics, often repeatedly administered in early childhood. Such teeth are colored in shades of yellow, gray or brown. Affected are all either uniformly or only some. Color change is also caused by increased intake of fluoride - fluorosis teeth. It is typical by the presence of chalky white spots on an otherwise normal colored tooth.

The whitening is only possible when teeth are healthy, without caries without gingivitis. Teeth treated with fillings or prosthetics cannot whiten. The patient should be overall healthy, teeth whitening in pregnancy not is not recommended. In our clinic DENT MEDICO we use only the whitening gels which meet the new EU legislation – ordering the maximum concentration of 6% hydrogen peroxide in the whitening compositions.

During the surgery whitening procedure we firstly apply a protective barrier so to the gum don’t come into contact with a bleaching gel. Then is applied to the teeth a special hydrogen peroxy gel combined with blue light with UV, which improves the degree of whitening. This is repeated 3-4 times each for 15 minutes. The resulting effect of whitening teeth persists individually varying time. It depends on the enamel quality, the mode of implementation of oral hygiene and also to the action of various external pigments on teeth (e.g. smoking, coffee, tea, etc.). Insufficient effect cannot be claimed because it is not influenced. If necessary, at individually determined intervals, the bleaching procedure can be repeated.

Home Tooth Whitening Opalescence

Tooth whitening can be done in the comfort of your home. Dental hygienist take the fingerprints of your teeth from which the laboratory prepare a made to measure silicone molds, which fits exactly to your teeth. Then at home you inject the whitening gel in these molds on the upper and lower jaw and front part. 10% or 16% carbamide peroxide whitening gel is used from 4 to 6 hours during the night. Home bleaching process takes 2 – 4 weeks.

The sensitivity of the teeth and gums during bleaching?

Yes. Penetration of the whitening agent to the teeth may cause their increased sensitivity, particularly to thermal stimuli (cold drinks, hot coffee and tea). This sensibility is temporary and usually lasts no longer than 1-2 days. Its intensity cannot be fully predicted. Certain indicator may be a sensitivity of the teeth already before whitening teeth (reactions to cold drinks, scaling etc.). This sensitivity can be reduced by using special pastes, mouthwashes or gels. Substances which reduce susceptibility are already a direct part of some whitening products. Another possibility are special gels to reduce sensitivity, which can be applied to the carrier between its whitening. The sensitivity of the gums is also temporary. In the long run contrary effect of bleaching agents on the gums positive. Studies have shown that it acts against plaque and reduces swelling and redness of gums – a sign of unwanted inflammation.

Is the teeth whitening always successful?

Mostly yes. Tooth whitening rate depends on the primary cause of tooth discoloration. In mild cases, one surgery procedure or 2 weeks of home whitening may sufficient. Complicated color changes (smoking, tetracycline teeth, fluorosis), however, may require a combination of bleaching techniques and take several months.

What are “not allowed” during teeth whitening?

While whitening is the tooth surface “open” and more receptive to color pigments. If you don’t want to counteract the effect of whitening, it is advisable to avoid a lot of colored food and drink. These include coffee, black tea, red wine, red beet, soy sauce … This refers to the period of actual bleaching and approximately two weeks after completion of whitening when the result achieved in color is stabilized.

What if I have on teeth white fillings and crowns? Does it whiten too?

No. The color of crowns and fillings remain original. After whitening they are noticeably darker and must be replaced with new, lighter. This exchange may take place no sooner than two weeks after the completion of teeth whitening. Only then the new color shade of the teeth is sufficiently stabilized.

Changes bleached teeth, then your color afterwards?

Yes. Whitened teeth are not resistant to color pigments in food and beverages. Slight darkening of the teeth during the time is therefore possible. Never, however, does not completely go back to the original color! The achieved result can be maintained by using special whitening pastes, gels and lotions. Very effective is also a regular care at dental hygienist, who professionally clean the teeth, removes tartar and pigments by using special equipment. If you still get the feeling with time that the teeth are slightly darker, there is nothing easier than to repeat a few home whitening applications.

And how much does teeth whitening cost?

The total price of the treatment will depend on the chosen method of whitening and the number of repetitions for each application. Important is also the need of active participation with your doctor or hygienist and the costs of your treatment. The price for teeth whitening can range on average between 5,000 to 10,000 CZK (mild cases, fewer applications), in more severe cases, up to 20,000 CZK (long-whitening of much discolored teeth, repeated surgery whitening). Your experienced doctor will be the best guide in the selection of whitening tailored to your needs, time and budget. Do not hesitate to ask!

How to keep your teeth white?

After whitening the tooth surface is “open” and more receptive to color pigments. These include coffee, black and green tea, red wine, red beet, and soy sauce, as far as possible so smoke. After 2 weeks, the achieved color result is completely stabilized.
