How orthodontic treatment work?

We start with a consultations and initial examination, where we find the dental status and schedule the options for orthodontic treatment. For exact treatment plan is needed to make an orthodontic documentation models of dental, panoramic X-ray picture of teeth, profile X-ray of the head, photo documentation of the patient and in growing patients and wrist X-ray to determine the skeletal age. On the basis of this we prepare an individual treatment plan which we discuss in detail with the patient or with their parents, predict the time-consumption, the financial participation of the patient and we can begin the orthodontic treatment.

Rovnátka DENT MEDICOThe next step is the active phase of treatment with fixed appliance. Fixed apparatus (or fixed braces) are the most used appliance in orthodontic treatment, thanks to which we perform shifts teeth and dental arches into the planned position. We use most often a metal clasps, another variant if the ceramic brackets that are less noticeable. The mean treatment duration with fixed appliance is 2 years (although this depends on the degree of severity of the orthodontic deviations, as well as on patient cooperation). A prerequisite for treatment with fixed appliance is exemplary oral hygiene. If a patient cleans during treatment properly teeth, then he doesn’t have to worry about a caries under the braces. It is necessary to pay attention to eating habits and avoiding certain foods to avoid releasing a lodge of the tooth.

Another option is treatment sensing orthodontic appliances or braces sensing, which is mainly used in mixed dentition for some specific defects. Removable devices do not allow the full range of orthodontic movement and a certain disadvantage is that the treatment outcome depends entirely on patient compliance. If a patient wears braces, the result will obviously fail.

After removing apparatus starts retention, or the maintenance phase of treatment, when are used a fixed retainers to maintain the regular position of teeth, which are glued to the rear surfaces of the teeth (not visible), and the retention plate, which are worn at night for a certain time after stopping treatment. These devices are use to prevent a return to the original position of the teeth and allow the teeth to adapt to the new position and thereby ensure a stable result of orthodontic treatment.
