Baldus Touch — nitrous oxide sedation

If dental visits make you nervous, or you find treatment easier when you are feeling relaxed, we offer nitrous oxide sedation (commonly known as laughing gas) during our procedures. Throughout the treatment you remain fully conscious and can communicate with your dentist, but you feel calmer and more at ease.

We administer the sedation using the Baldus Touch, a state-of-the-art device from German manufacturer Baldus.

How the sedation works and who it is suitable for

How treatment with the Baldus Touch works

A soft mask is placed over your face, through which you breathe a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide.
The dentist adjusts the ratio of the two gases continuously based on how you respond to the sedation.
Throughout the procedure you remain conscious, can understand your dentist's instructions and are able to respond to them.
Once the treatment is complete, the dentist removes the mask and you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes.
The effect wears off quickly.

Who is sedation suitable for?

Nitrous oxide sedation is a good option if you feel nervous about visiting the dentist or having dental hygiene treatment. It is generally better suited to shorter appointments for adults (up to around 2 hours) or for children who simply need to feel a little calmer during treatment rather than being put to sleep. Adults and younger clients should otherwise be in good health and free of any relevant conditions.

If you are facing a more complex oral surgery procedure, or if your fear of the dentist is significant, deeper analgosedation or general anaesthesia may be more appropriate, allowing you to sleep through the treatment entirely.
