MD. Brokešová: Extraction of the “wisdom tooth” ( “eight”)

To a very frequent and sometimes feared surgery belongs the extraction of “eight”. Third molars grow into the dental arch in an adult (18 to 24 years of age).  But the tooth may grow in the oral cavity even at a later age. Expert opinion on the removal of third molar varies considerably depending on the overall health of the patient, the patient’s age and specific diagnosis as well as the expertise and experience of the dentist / dental surgeon. It is always necessary to consider the personality of the individual patient and their current needs. Therefore, it is difficult to strictly define the boundaries for the decision to remove “eight”. The decision must be implemented individually.


Interdental brushes, dental floss

Interdental brushes and dental floss are used to clean between the teeth and their regular use is as important as cleaning with the classic brush. They help to remove plaque from between the teeth and thereby prevent occurrence of interdental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis later. Interdental spaces should be cleaned regularly, at least once a day.

Tartar and its effect on teeth

A presence of tartar in the oral cavity precedes plaque adhering on the teeth. A dental plaque adheres to most of the tooth surface, especially around the neck, in the interdental spaces and gingival groove (space between the tooth and gum). When the insufficient elimination by using appropriate dental appliances, and with a using a proper cleaning techniques, it mineralize afterwards or hardens due to the incorporation of minerals into the plaque. The surface of tartar is rough and therefore serves as a place for the accumulation of additional food leftovers and plaque.

Total discoloration of the tooth depends on the color and translucency of the outer layers (enamel), and the color of the layer beneath the enamel (or dentine dentin), which is compared to enamel yellow and in varying degrees shows through the surface. The toothbrush is an effective tool to remove plaque. The right toothbrush should have a small working head, which enables better handling of the mouth and precise cleaning. It should be soft, as the stiff brush can damage the gums and expose tooth necks. The bristles should be trimmed straight. It is also important to realize that the more bristles are on the brush head, the less work it takes to clean the teeth.


The sensitivity of the gums and teeth

An increased tooth sensitivity is usually detected when eaten cold, hot, sour or sweet drinks or food. Stripping of the tooth necks (between the crown and root of the tooth) can be also caused by incipient periodontitis. The most common cause of sensitive teeth is actually a mechanical damage caused by poor dental cleaning technique, unsuitable tools (too hard brush), a lot of pressure on the toothbrush or the inconvenient tension of a mucous membranes and a frenulum in the mouth. Increased tooth sensitivity and gum also may indicate a dental caries. The increased sensitivity can also be caused by an old and inadequate fillings, a cracks or a holes on the teeth, or bruxism (clenching and gnashing of teeth).
